WIZKID MAKES HISTORY AT THE HEADIES, 2022


History was made on the 4th of September, 2022 as the 15th edition of the prestigious Headies award show was hosted at the Cobb Energy Performing Center Atlanta, Georgia, making it the first time the award show has ever been hosted outside the shores of Nigeria.

Nollywood star Osas Ighodaro and Hollywood actor Anthony Anderson were the host of this years edition of the award show. The event was filled with glitz and glamour and electrifying musical performance from Rugger, Asake and others entertained the audience. The show was graced with attendances from various Nigerian and American celebrities and dignitaries.

Afrobeat superstar Ayo Balogun, globally known as Wizkid yesterday joined the likes of Fireboy DML, Wande Coal to become one of the few artistes to receive 5 awards or more in one night at the Headies. Wizkid also made history by becoming the highest recipient of the award. His success at the Headies started with him winning the Next rated award category at the 2011 edition of the award show and has spun across the past decade of his career bringing the tally to 20.

The Headies, in its usual fashion left a trail of mixed feelings among various artistes, music producers and  fans. Music producer and song-writer Masterkraft penned a lenghty Twitter thread to vent his frustration at the organisers of the show for constantly ignoring his successes.

BNXN (Next rated), Gyakie (Best West African artiste), Fave (Rookie of the year), Olamide (Best rap album), Ladipoe (Best rap single), Ayra Starr (Viewer’s choice), Waje (Best vocal performance), Flavour (Best Alternative song), A-Q (Lyricist on the roll), Ibejii (Alternative album), Fireboy DML (Afrobeat pop single), Kcee, Okwesili Eze Group (Best inspirational song), Adekunle Gold (Song writer of the year), Diamond Platnumz (East African artiste of the year), Chris Brown (International artiste of the year), Goya Menor, Nektunez (Best street-hop artiste), Oxlade (Best vocal performance, male), Patoranking (Recording of the year, Best Reggae/Dancehall album), Tems (Best R&B album, Female artiste of the year), Innoss’B (Central African artiste of the year), Latifa (The Headies award for North African artiste), Focalistic (Best Southern African artiste of the year), Davido (Humanitarian award, Digital artiste of the year), Burna boy (Best African artiste, best male artiste), Wizkid (Album of the year, Best collaboration, Best R&B single, Song of the year, Best Afrobeat pop album). Other awards of notable mention include The Headies Special Recognition given to Oladapo Daniel Oyebanji popularly known as D’banj. He joins the likes of Don Jazzy, Psquare and many other recipients of the award category. 5-time Grammy Award winning Beninese singer-songwriter, actress and activist, Angelique Kidjo, who is notable for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos was inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame as well.
