Popular Nigerian highlife singer and guitarist, Prof. Sir Victor Uwaifo has passed on.
The ‘Guitar boy’ and composer of the Akwete rhythm sound, celebrated his 80th birthday earlier in March.
He was said to have died of a brief illness on Saturday 28th of August, 2021.
The legend was a well educated and enlightened man, who was a University lecturer, sculptor, writer and musical instrument inventor.
He was the first professional musician to be awarded with the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and also the first Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria.
His tales of his encounter with a Mermaid at the bar beach is worthy of the archives and would be used as reference years to come.
