Women in Imo March Against Drug Abuse

With the vocal nature of the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the vibe is beginning to change. In the past, we have seen first ladies who just hide in the shadows of their husbands, and are seen in very ceremonial exposures that always look all played out. We have never had a first lady who is involved in the day to day affairs of Nigeria, and Nigerians in general.

However, I must add that Madam Patience Jonathan is in this category too, we remember how she never failed to express herself on issues that bothered Nigerians, well, Mrs Aisha Buhari is doing just well in that. We should note that, women are like mothers of the society, even the male folks in the biggest offices are still children to these women, because they have the key. We remember how Esther in the Bible was able to turn the fortunes of her people who were going to be executed, well, Mrs Aisha Buhari may just be our modern day saviour.

Apart from the First Lady , it has been reported that women in Imo state have protested the rise in drug abuse in our society.  The women in Umuoma-Nekede in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, on the 17th of April, 2022, protested against the high level of drug-related activities in their community and other places in the state .

The dress code for the  women was black and white as they took the message around the community while carrying placards with clear inscriptions directing the state government to prosecute those in the business of selling hard drugs .

They kicked off with this move , after their Easter Conference , the woman leader was saddened by the roles of drug abuse in society saying that apart from holding back  developmental strides  of their community, it also has serious consequences on the users as many have gone mad and lost their sense of reasoning .

In her words, “We are protesting around our community against drugs, hard drugs like Mkurummiri, Marijuana, hemp and other hard drugs. Whether you are a dealer or a consumer we don’t want it again. If you are a tenant please leave our community. If you are our son stop because you will have the women of Umuoma to contend with.

“This drug is making our sons be useless. This is the decision we took after our 2022 Eater conference. We don’t want Igbo, Mkurummiri, guzuro and other drugs in our community again. The government should help us in this campaign. We want the best for our children. We want the best for our community.”
