The Executive Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed shock over the accident that involved the state-owned staff bus and a train at Ikeja area of the state in the early hours of Thursday.
A train had collided with a Lagos state staff bus conveying staff of the Lagos state government to work at PWD area of Ikeja thereby leaving six passengers dead and others seriously injured.
The incident was reported to have happened around 7. O’clock in the morning.
The governor who said he was deeply saddened by the incident admonished Nigerians to pray for the families of the victims and ask for mercy and protection for the state.
In his words, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the train/bus accident . The vehicle was conveying staff of the Lagos state government, our staff who serve the state in different capacities. Let’s say a prayer for the families and a prayer of mercy and protection for our state.”
Sanwo-Olu also appreciated eye -witnesses who swung into action and joined in the rescue efforts.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. A big thank you to well meaning Lagosians who immediately joined in rescue efforts.”
“Our first responders and emergency services are on ground and we will share more information shortly,” He stated.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in a statement signed by the Director of General of the agency said the injured victims have been administered first aid treatment by the agency’s medical team and were being transported to the trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.
The Statement reads,
On arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that a Viale BRT bus and a train were involved in an accident at the above-mentioned address.
The injured victims have been administered first aid treatment by the agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials, well stabilized and being transported to the trauma center at LASUTH Ikeja for further treatment.
The agency’s LRT at Cappa alongside LRT at C3, LRU paramedics at C3, Onipanu, Cappa, LASAMBUS officials, Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, LNSC, and Nigerian Army are responders present at the scene of the incident.
