The Nigerian federal government has officially disclosed its proposed activities to mark the upcoming 63rd Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with organizing the celebration.
The festivities are set to kick off on September 25 with a World Press Briefing, setting the stage for a week of significant events.
A Symposium and Public Lecture are scheduled for September 28, followed by a Jumaat Service on September 29, showcasing the nation’s diversity and unity.
In keeping with tradition, there will be a Church Service on October 1, emphasizing the importance of faith in Nigeria’s history and progress.
The highlight of the celebration will be the Presidential Broadcast on the same day, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address the citizens.
The grand finale of the Independence Anniversary celebration will take place on October 2 with an impressive parade.
The committee responsible for coordinating these events consists of an impressive lineup of key figures from various government ministries and agencies. This includes the Minister of Information and Culture, Minister of Interior, Minister of Finance, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Additionally, several permanent secretaries from various government offices, including the Government Special Operations (GSO), Security and Secretarial Office (SSO), Ecological Project Office (PEAO), and the Ministry of Health, are actively involved in the preparations.
Senator Akume emphasized that the sub-committees formed within the main committee would receive their terms of reference shortly.
Furthermore, he encouraged sub-committee secretaries to present their budgets promptly for consideration and approval, ensuring that the preparations move forward without delay and promptly.
