The long awaited Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) known as the eNaira will be formally unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja on Monday. The earlier launch was to take place on October 1 but was postponed as a result of the line up of events for during the country’s 61st Independence Anniversary.
“The launch of the eNaira is a culmination of several years of research work by the Central Bank of Nigeria in advancing the boundaries of payments system in order to make financial transactions easier and seamless for every strata of the society.” The Bank Spokesperson, Osita Nwasinobi said in a statement.
He further emphasized that eNaira is a major step forward in the journey of the evolution of money and just like the physical Naira, the Central Bank will ensure that the eNaira is accessible to everyone. He also stated that the Central Bank will work with relevant partners to provide an easy process that users can benefit seamlessly from, including those in rural areas.
