In line with the need to accommodate growing economic activities in the region, His Majesty, Nnaemeka Achebe, Agbogidi, Obi of Onitsha has called for improved infrastructural development in the Onitsha metropolis.

He made this call during the events of the 2020 Onicha Ofala festival in Anambra state.

While commending the commencement of operations at the Onitsha River Port as well as work on the second Niger Bridge and Anambra International Cargo Airport, the Obi of Onitsha stated that the city needed improved infrastructure to cope with pressure from the facilities.

His words: “While the second Niger Bridge, ports operations and the airport will lead to increased economic activities and prosperity in the metropolis, as well as in Anambra and the other southeast states, they will also put pressure on an already dilapidated infrastructure in Onitsha”.

Furthermore, HM Nnaemeka Achebe also called for the design and implementation of an urban renewal plan for Onitsha metropolis based on an updated UN-Habitat 2009 Structure Plan for Onitsha and Satellite Towns.

This plan according to him will best be executed through the creation of a Greater Onitsha Development Authority which encompasses the city and its neighbouring towns.

It should be pointed out also that this year’s Ofala festival was held in a modest way to comply fully with the Covid -19 safety and hygiene protocols.
