As a result of the effects of sand mining which has caused erosion problems, indigenes of Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area have appealed to the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, to intervene on their behalf.
The regent of the community, Prince Noel Ezenwa who addressed journalists, stated that the leadership of the community had written Ikeazor and the member representing the area in the House of Representatives, Obinna Chidoka, on the matter.
Furthermore, he said that both Ikeazor and Obinna Chidioka have visited the site and have seen the devastation caused by sand mining. They promised to talk to the state government to stop the activities of sand miners. Thus, he reiterated the need for the activities of sand miners which have caused erosion problems in the community to be checkmated.
Meanwhile, Abia State Government has given illegal occupants still doing business on the premises of Enyimba Hotels, Aba, 48 hours to vacate the property or be prepared to “face the consequences.”
Dr. Anthony Agbazuere, the Chief of Staff to the governor, gave the directive while addressing the illegal occupants, comprising artisans, mechanics, and traders during an inspection visit to the site.
