Uzoma Odimara, affectionately known as “Area Scatter,” stands as a remarkable figure in Nigerian history, particularly in the realm of entertainment. Hailing from Ovurugo Mgbuiishi, OhajiI, Ohaji/Egbema LGA, Imo State, he left an indelible mark as the country’s first documented cross-dresser, blending musical talent with a bold and unconventional persona.

Beginning as a male civil servant in Imo State during the 20th century, Area Scatter’s journey took a transformative turn after the Nigerian Civil War. Following a period of isolation, he reemerged seven months and seven days later, embracing a stunning feminine identity. He attributed this transformation to divine intervention, claiming supernatural powers granted by the gods, which he believed enhanced his musical prowess and femininity.

Area Scatter’s presence electrified the streets of 1970s Eastern Nigeria. With his ornamental thumb piano and captivating vocals, he charmed audiences with his unique style, characterized by braided hair, makeup, and extravagant attire, including heels. Despite the conservative societal norms of the time, he found acceptance and admiration, captivating audiences with his flamboyance and talent.

His rise to fame saw him performing for both royalty and commoners alike, captivating audiences with his musical prowess and charismatic presence. He became a fixture on popular television shows, notably gracing the screens of Ukonu’s Club, a renowned program of the era celebrated for its cultural significance and legendary cast.

As the leader of the musical group “Ugwu Anya Egbulam,” Area Scatter produced an EP and numerous melodious tracks, including “Nwannem Uwam Egbulam” and “Uwa Amaraala Okaa Oke Nwachukwu.” His influence extended beyond entertainment, as he became one of the first Nigerian transvestites to gain mainstream media recognition.

Tragically, Area Scatter’s life was cut short in an auto crash along the Port Harcourt road in Owerri. His untimely demise left a void in the Nigerian entertainment scene, but his legacy endures through his groundbreaking contributions to music and culture. Area Scatter’s family laid him to rest in his hometown of Oburugo, Ohaji/Egbema LGA, with NTA Channel 6 Aba broadcasting his burial ceremony, a testament to his lasting impact on Nigerian society.
