Renowned Nigerian comic actor John Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, has passed away at the age of 62 due to cardiac arrest at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos State.
The news of Mr. Ibu’s passing has triggered an outpouring of grief online, with fans reminiscing about his legendary roles

Despite the somber mood, fans and colleagues are celebrating Okafor’s immense contributions to Nigerian cinema. Social media is flooded with cherished memories of his iconic performances, highlighting his irreplaceable role in the entertainment landscape.
Blessing Ebigieson, National President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), expressed profound sadness over the loss but commended the actor’s resilience. Emma Eyaba, Chairman of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) FCT chapter, underscored Okafor’s profound impact on Nollywood’s evolution.
Born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu State, John Okafor featured in over 200 Nollywood films, including the iconic ‘Mr. Ibu’ series.
His legacy endures through timeless classics such as “Police Recruit” and “Ibu in Prison.” Despite health setbacks, the actor remained committed to his craft until the end.
In October 2023, Mr. Ibu revealed his health challenges, which eventually led to a leg amputation in November of the same year.
Throughout his ordeal, he maintained hope and gratitude for the support from his fans and the public.
