A building has collapsed at Ochanja Market, Onitsha, Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of approximately five people. Rescuers have also extracted about 26 people from the rubble.
The building, a plaza still under construction by a private developer, collapsed while workers were still on site on Monday evening.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the state visited the collapse site on Tuesday, 27th February and described it as “a tragic incident that should not have happened.” “My government did not approve this building. We will redesign this area and rebuild it properly. At their own expense, the contractor will demolish the illegal buildings erected here,” Soludo said. The Governor also expressed sympathy for the people who died but promised that the government would take care of the hospital bills for those receiving treatment in the hospital.
