Tony Oneweek, the acclaimed singer and cousin to the actor, confirmed via Instagram the passing of Amaechi, who succumbed to kidney failure after a prolonged battle. Back in November 2023, the actor disclosed his struggle with paralysis on the left side of his body, which had persisted for months. He attributed the onset of illness to his time on a movie set.

Prior to his demise, Amaechi’s cousin, Tony Muonagor, had revealed the actor’s ongoing health challenges, which included kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke. He detailed Amaechi’s deteriorating condition, necessitating weekly dialysis and physiotherapy at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra.

Amaechi, born on August 20, 1962, hailed from Idemili, Anambra state, and was a father of four. After completing his youth service in 1989, he transitioned from working at the News Agency of Nigeria to pursuing acting. Notably, he gained recognition for his role as Akunatakasi in ‘Taboo 1’, marking his debut in the movie industry.

Tragically, Amaechi’s passing occurred shortly after the death of fellow Nollywood actor John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor. Mr Ibu’s demise on March 2 at Evercare Hospital in Lagos was attributed to cardiac arrest. The 62-year-old had battled a life-threatening illness for months before his passing.
