Why Houston? Chadwick Burnaw Explains
But why Houston, you might ask? Well, Latin City’s founder, Chadwick Burnaw, has a thing or two to say about that. He’s singing Houston’s praises, and for good reason: “Houston has a really large community of people from the African diaspora. I’ve read that people say it’s like a little Lagos.”
Chadwick isn’t wrong. Houston is a cultural melting pot, with a large Nigerian immigrant population, a thriving Black community, and vibrant Caribbean and Afro-Latino groups. Latin City aims to celebrate the diverse Latin community, emphasizing the underrepresentation of Afro-Latinos in mainstream media. But not here! Latin City is all about creating experiences that shine a spotlight on these rich, old traditions and the unique beauty of these cultures.
And hey, if you think the Diaspora Food Festival is where the party ends, you’d be mistaken. Latin City has more up its sleeve! On October 14th and 15th, they’ll be throwing the Sazon Latin Food Festival in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Just like the Diaspora Food Festival, it’s free to enter, and it’s happening right at Karbach. Expect to be transported to Latin culinary heaven with an array of delectable dishes from local vendors.
So, there you have it, my friends. The culinary scene in Houston is sizzling, and Latin City is at the forefront, making sure every culture, every flavor, and every tradition gets its moment in the spotlight. Get ready to tantalize your taste buds and celebrate the vibrant mosaic of the African diaspora and Latin cultures right here in H-town. See you at the festivals!
