Herbert and Zelmyra knew what they were doing when they shared the marital vow, “…to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. I will love and honor you all the days of my life” in 1924.
Married for 86 years 290 days as of 27 February 2011, Herbert (b.1905) and Zelmyra Fisher (b. 1907) became the longest-married couple in the world.
They grew up together as best friends in North Carolina, USA.

Divorce was never an option or even a thought.
The couple did not only survive time, together, they survived life hurdles including world war ll, and the Great Depression, and lived together to witness the rule of 15 US Presidents and the last being Barrack Obama.
According to Herbert and Zelmyra, their long marriage was built on love and other crucial qualities- respect, support, communication, faithfulness, honesty, and truth.
Speaking on what made their marriage grow stronger and more secure over the years, they said in a Twitter Q&A on Valentine’s Day in 2010, “Divorce was NEVER an option or even a thought.”
Of course, life in the 1920s was challenging for many people, and having a hard-working and resourceful husband like Herbert would have made a big difference for his family.

“If he had two cents, he saved one cent,” Zelmyra said.
What a fantastic life they lived!
What God has joined together let no man put asunder.
They spent their entire lives in the beautiful home where they raised their incredible five children. Despite facing financial difficulties, they never let it dampen their spirit and love for each other. They still managed to provide nourishment and education for their children, even sending them to university! It’s a true testament to their unwavering love and commitment to their family.
They truly embody the adage, “We reap what we sow.” Their love and values have deeply rooted in their children and will last a lifetime.
