Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília on Monday, where he emphasized the importance of stronger cultural connections between Nigeria and Brazil.

The meeting took place during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, which had already featured bilateral talks with President da Silva. Although Soyinka’s visit was private, it reflected the shared interest of both countries in strengthening relations between Africa’s largest Black nation and South America’s biggest economy.

Soyinka presented his translated book titled Mito, Literatura e o Mundo Africano (Myth, Literature and the African World) to President da Silva, a gesture that underscored his commitment to cultural exchange and dialogue.

In his discussion, the Nobel Laureate stressed that cultural diplomacy is a powerful means of fostering mutual understanding and building meaningful global partnerships.

Beyond the presidential meeting, Soyinka also engaged with local communities by attending cultural renaissance events across Brazil. His participation highlighted the deep-rooted ties between African and Afro-Brazilian traditions and further promoted cultural exchange between both nations.
