In a bid to produce fit-for-purpose and future-ready graduates, Nigerian universities have received support from the United Nations Childrenās Fund (UNICEF) and Unilever Nigeria Plc. On July 4, the two organizations visited the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka to host a one-day career and self-skills development programme for students.
The event, part of the “Future Unilever Campus Ambassador Programme (FUCAP),” attracted thousands of students from various disciplines. UNILAG is one of 20 universities selected for this training initiative, which aims to equip three million youths with essential skills by 2026, with a target of adequately training about 700,000 by that year.
During the event, UNICEF Nigeria Programme Specialist Mr. Bharat Kundra emphasized the importance of acquiring skills beyond formal education. He noted that as the world evolves, the skills needed to stay relevant and competitive in the job market are also changing. Kundra highlighted UNICEFās efforts to provide youths with knowledge and skills through various programs, including the FUCAP partnership with Unilever Nigeria.
FUCAP aims to equip youths with 21st-century skills such as effective communication, collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking, digital and financial literacy, and resilience. Kundra encouraged students to acquire these skills, take initiatives, explore opportunities, share ideas, and remain optimistic to secure a better future.
Zainab Ajadi, People Partner at Unilever Nigeria and FUCAP Project Lead, also underscored the necessity for youths to acquire these skills to thrive in the workplace and become self-sustaining. She reaffirmed Unilever Nigeriaās commitment to helping young people reach their full potential and contribute to national development, aligning with UNICEF’s similar goals.
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services) of UNILAG, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, echoed the need for students to be well-equipped with knowledge and skills for societal relevance. She highlighted UNILAGās dedication to entrepreneurship and innovation programs for all students ahead of graduation.
