UMU-ONITSHAAMAKA OF INDIANA, INC. proudly invites everyone to an unforgettable cultural gala celebrating the rich heritage of Onitsha, Nigeria. The event will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the Global Village, located at 4235 Lafayette Rd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46254.
The evening promises to be filled with cultural presentations from both men and women and children, highlife and afrobeats music with a lot of traditional Igbo dishes to go round.
The special guest of the day is His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha CFR, mni (Agbogidi), who will be making a royal visit to Indianapolis. Joining him will be the esteemed Mayor of Indianapolis, Joe Hogsett, symbolizing the strong ties between Onitsha and Indianapolis, two cities united under the Indianapolis Sister Cities International (ISCI) program.
Indianapolis Sister Cities International (ISCI) Program
The Indianapolis Sister Cities International (ISCI) program fosters mutually beneficial partnerships between Indianapolis and its sister cities around the world. Onitsha, the only African city among the ten sister cities in the ISCI program, joined as the ninth sister city and has since been part of numerous cultural and technical exchanges. The ISCI program strengthens historical bonds, encourages youth education opportunities, promotes diverse economic development, and collaborates on emerging global issues. The cities currently in the program are:
1. Taiwan
2. Germany
3. Italy
4. Slovenia
5. China
6. Brazil
7. United Kingdom
8. India
9. Nigeria (Onitsha)
The gala event is a tribute to Onitsha’s unique cultural heritage. The organizers envision that the Sister Cities initiative will soon lead to a “Youth Exchange Students” program, offering young students from both cities the opportunity to experience each other’s cultures. It is hoped that students from Indianapolis can visit Onitsha during the Ofala festival, while students from Onitsha can experience the iconic Indy 500 race and the renowned children’s museum in Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, Ngolika Age Grade (America), an age grade of people born between 1980 and 1982 who are also resident abroad specifically in the USA, joins Umu Onitshaamaka Inc. in welcoming Agbogidi the Obi of Onitsha and other dignitaries to Indianapolis ahead of the event.
