The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr Daniel Okoh has implored all Nigerian Church leaders to be very neutral in their stand regarding election. He stated that the essence of church leaders is to guide the church and christians in choosing their leaders.

He expressed this in a gathering on Sunday which was to celebrate the 75th birthday of the founder of the Grace of God Mission International, Bishop Paul Nwachukwu.

Dr Daniel declared his optimism in the fact that the church had a role to play in the unfolding of the next president of Nigeria. He said, “The church should be non-partisan in election matters, it has a duty to ensure the people are properly guided in the choice of leaders they choose. If Nigerians can unite and forge a common front, the choice to turn around this country is in their hands”.

Prior to the time of Dr Okoh’s expression, the overseer of the Love of Christ Generation Church, Esther Ajayi had stated that leaders should ensure that the church isn’t turned to campaign grounds. She also explained that not all politicians who had been in her church attended for the purpose of campaigning, she said they mostly came to worship.

She said “If someone is a candidate and he has been worshiping in a church, won’t he or she go to church again or won’t they go to the mosque? We have to know our limits. A church of God must not turn to a campaign ground.”

She declared that her alliance with some politicians will not make her go against the rules of the Independent National Electoral Commission. “…We have to know our limits. A church of God must not turn to a campaign ground…”, she added.

In preparation for the commencement of campaigns for the 2023 presidential elections, the INEC commissioner has warned all candidates and parties against the use of masqueraders, public facilities and religious centers for their campaigns. He also stated that non-compliance to the rules will be duly followed up with appropriate sanctions.

The campaigns for the 2023 presidential elections have been set to commence on the 23rd of September, 2022. The elections have also been set for the 25th of February, 2023.
