The Sucena Cultural Centre in Maringá is now accepting new members for its weekly capoeira and Afro-Brazilian dance classes. These cultural activities, which are free to join, are held at the centre’s headquarters and are tailored to different age groups.
The initiative offers a chance for people to connect with Afro-Brazilian heritage through physical movement and traditional art forms.
The centre has made registration accessible, especially for low-income families, black and indigenous communities, public school students, and those on full scholarships. An exclusive class is also available for women aged 15 and above.
Afro-Brazilian dance classes do not require any prior experience. Participants aged 15 and above can join and will be introduced to popular cultural dances such as coco de roda, jongo, puxada de rede, maculelê, and samba de roda.
Aside from dance and capoeira, the centre provides guided tours and storytelling sessions for schools. These visits are aimed at helping students and teachers deepen their understanding of Afro-Brazilian traditions. Visitors will have access to a permanent exhibition featuring African and Afro-Brazilian art, photographs, instruments, and an archive room that tells the history of Capoeira Sucena and the centre’s journey in Maringá.
Founded in 1989, the Sucena Cultural Centre is a non-profit institution recognised nationally for its contributions to cultural, social, and sports development. Its headquarters, opened in 2006, has hosted cultural events, exhibitions, and presentations by renowned figures in Afro-popular culture. The centre’s work is currently supported by the Funarte Program to Support Continuous Actions 2023, the Aldir Blanc National Policy for the Promotion of Culture, and the National Policy for Living Culture, with backing from the Maringá Department of Culture.
“The Sucena Cultural Centre has always worked to promote and promote Afro-Brazilian culture in our city and in the state of Paraná. Being able to count on subsidy programs like this, in addition to strengthening our actions, helps more people benefit from culture, which is a right for everyone and will certainly bring significant benefits to the entire community. We are excited to be able to reach more people and hope that programs to promote culture like this continue to grow stronger and embrace more people,” says Mestre Chupim.
