Rihanna, Diana Ross, Others Make Statement Arrivals At Met Gala 2025

The Met Gala returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May, drawing the world’s attention to New York City for one of fashion’s most anticipated nights.This year’s event, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” paid tribute to the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition and marked the first time since 2003 that the gala concentrated solely on menswear. The exhibit and its corresponding dress code, “Tailored for You,” explored the evolution of Black style and the history of Black dandyism, a tradition rooted in both resistance and self-expression.

Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s influential book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibition examined how Black men and women have used personal style as a means to challenge societal limitations and redefine perceptions of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The museum’s galleries showcased over three centuries of Black fashion, featuring garments, archival photographs, and works by trailblazers such as W.E.B. Du Bois and André Leon Talley.

On the midnight blue carpet, celebrities interpreted the theme with a dazzling array of custom suits, inventive tailoring, and bold couture. Rihanna, whose arrival is always highly anticipated, made headlines by debuting her third pregnancy. She wore a voluminous pinstripe skirt-suit by Marc Jacobs, accentuated by a dramatic hat and her signature braid, her baby bump on full display. Rihanna expressed her excitement for both the event and her growing family, while A$AP Rocky, her partner and one of the evening’s co-chairs, shared his joy at finally making their news public.

The guest list was a testament to the theme’s celebration of Black excellence and creativity. Diana Ross stunned in a white feathered cape and a bejewelled gown with an 18-foot train, assisted by her son Evan Ross as she navigated the iconic steps. Zendaya opted for a custom Louis Vuitton cream suit, her look understated yet striking with a pop of colour from her red nails. Sir Lewis Hamilton, another co-chair, wore a cream suit by Grace Wales Bonner, continuing his collaboration with the British designer.

Other standout ensembles included Doja Cat’s bold Marc Jacobs look with oversized shoulder pads and a leopard-print bustier, Tracee Ellis Ross in a hot pink Marc Jacobs suit with a matching top hat, and Lupita Nyong’o in a powder blue Chanel suit paired with a transparent cape and sparkling rhinestone eyebrows. Andre 3000 made a memorable entrance with a black and white piano and a trash bag as a purse, while Cardi B debuted a new hairstyle and eye colour in a green Burberry pantsuit.

The evening was not just a showcase of fashion but a powerful reflection on the role of style in shaping identity and challenging norms. Through their sartorial choices, attendees honoured the legacy of Black dandyism and its enduring influence on culture. The gallery of celebrity arrivals captured the spirit of the night, each look a statement of individuality and history woven together on one of fashion’s grandest stages.
