The Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Mr Rauf Olaniyan has been impeached. He was removed on Monday by members of the State House of Assembly, following series of allegations levelled against him.
The governor who deferred lately from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the All progressive Party (APC) was elected in 2019 on a joint ticket with the Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde on the platform of PDP.
In June, Olaniyan, had dragged the Oyo Assembly to court over the impeachment move against him by the lawmakers. The court restrained the state House of Assembly from going ahead with the impeachment process against Olaniyan, ordering that a seven-man panel be put up to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct against the deputy governor.
On July 14, the judge held that the impeachment move initiated by the lawmakers was constitutional, therefore the court gave lawmakers the go-ahead to continue with the impeachment process.
Now the impeachment move has been finalized and the deputy governor was found culpable and indicted of all allegations and complaints levelled against him.
The assembly approved Olaniyan’s removal from office leaning on section 188(9) of the 1999 constitution (as amended)
