According to Punch, following the removal of Rauf Olaniyan, the Oyo State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Adebayo Lawal as the new Deputy Governor, on Monday, 18th July, 2022.

The appointment happened after Governor Seyi Makinde nominated Mr Adebayo Lawal to the lawmakers for consideration as a replacement for former deputy, Olaniyan.

Before the approval, Mr Adebayo was the Chairman of the State Housing Corporation. He was also the state’s attorney general.

Mr Adebayo Lawal is from Kisi in the Irepo Local Government area of Oyo state.

Adebayo’s nomination was disclosed in a letter by the governor to the lawmakers, presented at the plenary.

The news agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House of assembly had gone on a short break not long after the impeachment of Olaniyan as the deputy governor.

The lawmakers however broke the silence at about 12.15 p.m to consider the approval of the new deputy governor.

While reading the letter from the Executive, the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, said it was delivered in response to a different letter dated July 18, 2022, that was sent earlier by the lawmaker to the Governor, informing him of the removal of Olaniyan.

Defending Lawal’s nomination, the House’s Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, said that the appointment should be kindly considered and approved.

Also supporting Lawal’s nomination, Kazeem Olayanju, who was representing Irepo/Olornsogo State Constituency, said that the House should approve Lawal as the new Deputy Governor of Oyo State.

In his statement, the speaker held the nomination to a voice vote.

He said that with the favorable vote, Lawal has finally been approved as the Deputy Governor of Oyo state.

However, the house of assembly adjourned plenary until 21st July, 2022.
