An Onitsha initiate, developed to discover and harness sporting talents of the teeming youths of Onitsha by the name “ Onitsha City Marathon (OCM)” announced that it has successfully bagged Coca-Cola Nigeria as its first official sponsor for the first of its kind marathon.
Onitsha City Marathon is a half marathon race which will cover about 21 kilometeres starting off from Onitsha Shoprite Mall, pass through DMGS/Zik’s Round about through Oguta Road then through the New Cemetery Road And from the MCC Road into the Express to Bridge Head and a U-turn to Ziks Mausoleum to New Spare Parts Market, a U-turn to terminate at Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha, scheduled to hold on 5th October 2019, as one of the build-up events to the annual Ofala Festival.
The Head of Media and publicity of OCM Mr Philip Balepo, on Sept. 5 said, the sponsor deal was sealed during a meeting with the Regional Trade Marketing Coordinator of Coca Cola Nigeria, Monday Afesumen in Onitsha.
Afesumen applauded the coming of the marathon to the great commercial city of Onitsha, saying: “since this is the maiden international edition, East of the Niger, Coca-Cola is happy to associate with the event’’, On the other hand, the OCM says it has also picked up media partnership relationship with two major radio stations in Onitsha – the City Radio 89.7 FM and WAZOBIA 93.7 FM.
Officially backed by Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the IAAF and the Association of International Marathoners (AIMS).
Mr Philip Balepo Lastly stated that the marathon has also been endorsed by the Traditional Ruler of Onitsha, HRM Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, The Obi of Onitsha, and also confirmed that OCM has recorded massive entries from home and abroad so far.
A top Kenyan Marathoner, Benard Bosuben, an elite athlete whose current best time is 1:03:45., has been confirmed for the race.’
