In his speech, Igwe Achebe expressed gratitude to these sponsors, noting that their support not only enhanced the festival but also helped showcase Onitsha’s culture to a broader audience. “Our culture is our identity, and events like the Azu Ofala offer us the opportunity to preserve and promote this heritage for future generations,” the monarch stated.
In the words of Peter Obi, “The Azu Ofala represents everything great about our culture—pride, resilience, and community. It’s an honour to be part of such a significant event.”
The Ofala Festival is a centuries-old tradition of the Onitsha people and other Igbo communities. Historically, it marks the end of the annual retreat of the Obi, during which the king engages in spiritual renewal and communing with the ancestors. The word “Ofala” derives from “Ofo,” meaning authority, and “Ala,” meaning land. Hence, the festival signifies the monarch’s authority over the land and his people. During this period, the Obi appears in full regalia, accepting homage from his subjects while celebrating their unity and shared heritage.
The festival has evolved into a major cultural event, not just for Onitsha but for the entire Igbo-speaking world, attracting tourists and dignitaries from around the globe. The Ofala Festival continues to serve as a beacon of cultural pride, promoting the preservation of Igbo customs while adapting to modern influences.
