A new chapter in African animation is about to unfold as ‘Iyanu’, an epic Nigerian animated series, gears up for its African premiere on Showmax. Streaming exclusively from June 13, 2025, the show promises to spotlight Africa’s storytelling brilliance while pushing the boundaries of digital technology in the creative sector.
Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, the first season of ‘Iyanu’ will be available for audiences to binge-watch across 44 African countries. The official trailer, now out, teases a visually stunning adventure deeply rooted in Nigerian culture and mythology.
Speaking on the series, Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels in West Africa, shared:
“‘Iyanu’ brings Nigerian culture and mythology to life excitingly and authentically. We are proud to be the home of its African premiere and can’t wait for audiences across the continent to experience this epic adventure on Showmax.”
Adapted from Roye Okupe’s graphic novel series, Iyanu: Child of Wonder—published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics (the force behind The Umbrella Academy and Hellboy)—the animated series is helmed by Okupe himself as creator, executive producer, and showrunner.
Set in the mystical kingdom of Yorubaland, the story follows Iyanu, a courageous young orphan who stumbles upon divine powers long forgotten since the legendary Age of Wonders. As darkness looms, she embarks on a thrilling journey alongside her friends Biyi and Toye, and a magical leopard named Ekun, to uncover the truth about her destiny.
‘Iyanu’ brings together an impressive lineup of African talent, featuring:
Serah Johnson as Iyanu
Okey Jude as Biyi, the carefree adventurer
Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye, the book-loving companion
Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori
Blossom Chukwujekwu as Kanfo, Toye’s father
Stella Damasus as Sewa
Shaffy Bello as Emi – The One Mother
Ike Ononye as Elder Alapani
Lion Forge Entertainment CEO, David Steward II, expressed excitement about the show’s impact:
“We’ve seen the passion and creativity that Roye Okupe and our entire team have poured into this project. With ‘Iyanu’ set to premiere on Cartoon Network, Max, and Showmax, we believe this is a major step in bringing culturally rich African stories to a global audience.”
With breathtaking visuals, powerful storytelling, and deep cultural roots, Iyanu is more than just an animated series—it’s a celebration of African mythology, creativity, and resilience. Get ready to experience Africa’s next big adventure when it lands on Showmax this June!
