Afrobeats has cemented its place on the global stage, not only dominating music charts and concert venues but now earning official recognition through civic honours in the United States.
Several Nigerian artists have had specific days declared in their names by city and state governments, acknowledging their cultural impact and contributions to music.
David ‘Davido’ Adeleke leads the list with two official days across two major US cities. On July 7, 2023, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed “Davido Day” after his sold-out Toyota Centre concert, which featured an Eko Bridge-inspired stage and highlighted his philanthropic work. A few months later, on November 18, Atlanta celebrated him during the inaugural A.W.\.A.Y. Festival. Davido also received a standing ovation at the Georgia State Capitol, where he was named an Outstanding Georgia Citizen.
In Minnesota, October 6 is known as “Wizkid Day” in honour of Ayodeji ‘Wizkid’ Balogun. The recognition was granted by Governor Mark Dayton in 2018 after Wizkid’s historic sold-out show at the Skyway Theatre. The rare honour placed him among a select group of global artists, including Beyoncé, who have achieved the same milestone.
February 6 is “Praiz Adejo Day” in Minnesota, recognising the achievements of Praise Adejo, known as ‘Praiz’. He was one of the earliest Nigerian artists to receive such civic recognition, honoured for his musical talent and charitable contributions. Praiz expressed gratitude to his supporters and to Minnesota for the acknowledgement.
Grammy Award winner Damini ‘Burna Boy’ Ogulu was honoured with “Burna Boy Day” on March 2 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston City Council, led by Councillor Ruthzee Louijeune, praised his efforts in championing marginalised voices and elevating Afrobeats on the global stage. Burna Boy dedicated the recognition to his fans and promised to continue using his music as a tool for unity.
These proclamations are more than symbolic gestures. They serve as milestones of cultural diplomacy, celebrating the role of Nigerian artists in shaping global music and bridging cultural divides. As Afrobeats continues to gain momentum, more Nigerian stars are expected to join this growing list of honorees.
