Nigeria has been placed in Group D of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), alongside Congo, Senegal, and Sudan. The draw ceremony took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday night.

The Home-based Super Eagles earned their spot in the tournament by defeating Ghana in a two-legged playoff last December, marking their return to the competition after a six-year absence.

Other groupings include Kenya, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia in Group A. Group B comprises Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. Group C will feature Uganda, Niger, and Guinea, alongside two wild card teams yet to be determined by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Originally scheduled for February 2025, the tournament has been postponed to August due to infrastructural challenges. CAF confirmed in a statement:

“Good progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities for the hosting of a successful CHAN. However, the CAF technical and infrastructure experts have advised that more time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful CHAN.”

In addition to the draw, CAF unveiled a new logo and trophy for the 8th edition of the championship. Highlighting the updated design, CAF said:

“The new look for the tournament brings a fresh identity and emphasizes its deep-rooted connections to African football and culture. The new TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 trophy features a sleek, contemporary design, combining gold and silver elements, representing the prestige and growing stature of the tournament. A significant detail is the 54 distinct lines encircling the trophy, symbolizing the 54 African nations united with a map of the continent at its core.”

Nigeria, runners-up in the 2018 edition after losing to Morocco in the final, will aim to claim their first CHAN title when the tournament kicks off in August. The event will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
