The 36th edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) has taken Abuja by storm, kicking off on November 22 with an ambitious lineup of events including the Jollof War amongst others at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, FCT, Abuja.
Organized by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), NAFEST has become a cornerstone for promoting Nigeria’s cultural identity, creativity, and unity since its debut in Lagos in 1970. This year’s theme, “Connected Culture,” highlights the power of cultural collaboration in fostering peace and inclusivity across the nation.
Speaking ahead of the festival, NCAC Director-General Obi Asika announced the rebranding of NAFEST to prioritize capacity building for creatives and talent development. “This year’s NAFEST is critical to us. We are planning on rebranding NAFEST as we have engaged development partners, private sector partners, reality show development partners, and more,” Asika said.
He also stated that Abuja was selected solely for its transformation into a vibrant cultural hub, not just a political center.
“We picked Abuja because Abuja has come alive, it’s not just a political headquarter it’s also a cultural city, a city of art.”
He emphasized integrating culture into Nigeria’s economic framework while ensuring the festival remains a platform for celebrating the nation’s diversity.
