The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) for its innovative measures in enhancing transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s procurement and contract award processes.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the BPP’s Director General, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, and other senior officials, Idris lauded the agency’s efforts in unraveling the secrecy often associated with procurement in the past.

“Before now, procurement processes were sometimes shrouded in mystery. I’m glad that you are changing that by making the system transparent. There’s nothing to hide—if Company A gets a contract, let everyone know why it was awarded. With this level of transparency, even those who lose contracts will understand and accept it,” the Minister said.

Idris highlighted the BPP’s introduction of a 20-working-day timeline to complete the procurement process as a groundbreaking initiative. He described it as a clear reflection of the agency’s commitment to innovation and its determination to overhaul procurement procedures in the country.

According to the Minister, an efficient procurement system will help conserve resources, which can be redirected towards poverty alleviation initiatives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Idris also pledged his ministry’s support in collaborating with the BPP to raise public awareness about the procurement process and to campaign against the vandalism of public infrastructure.

The Minister noted that the ministry has been renamed the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to emphasize public reorientation and the restoration of national values.

“The President is prioritizing reorientation and the reclamation of our values. Soon, he will launch the National Values Charter on behalf of Nigerians,” Idris revealed.

Earlier, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, the Director General of BPP, outlined the agency’s efforts to ensure fairness, accountability, and competition in awarding contracts. He announced that all procurement activities by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must now be concluded within the first half of the year.

The BPP, Dr. Adedokun said, is transitioning to an electronic procurement system, enabling contractors from across Nigeria and abroad to participate in bidding processes. He also shared that the Bureau is categorizing and classifying consultants and service providers to enhance the competitiveness of local contractors on a global scale.

To further ensure transparency, MDAs are now required to submit quarterly reports of all awarded contracts, including contractor details, which will be uploaded to the BPP portal. Additionally, new procurement guidelines have been developed for medical equipment, food security, and vehicles to streamline and standardize the process.

The Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, released the statement on Thursday, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and national development.
