Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is poised to commence the upgrade of Ibadan’s Alakia Airport to international standards, a move confirmed by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju. This significant step aligns with Makinde’s broader vision for economic development in the state.

An 11-member committee, led by former Commissioner for Finance Bimbo Adekanmbi, has been established to oversee the project. This committee was formed following the Federal Government’s approval of the airport’s upgrade, which came after the state government’s concerted efforts to push the initiative forward.

During the committee’s inauguration on July 30, Governor Makinde emphasized that the airport transformation is a key part of his administration’s economic strategy, particularly in promoting agribusiness. He noted that the project was not intended to compete with neighboring states but was a strategic move grounded in thorough research.

Makinde further elaborated on the rationale behind the project, stating, “The decision to upgrade the airport was a well-considered one, based on science, logic, and data.” He also highlighted that the groundwork for the project was laid during his first tenure, with a major milestone being the completion of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, now managed by the Bovas Group.

Once completed, the airport upgrade is expected to significantly boost the state’s economic prospects, drawing in international businesses and investments. This development is seen as a major step towards enhancing the region’s overall growth and creating new opportunities.
