Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that Lagos will make history as the first African city to host the prestigious E1 Racing Championship.
The governor announced in a statement shared on his X handle on Sunday, highlighting his weekend visit to Monaco, where he attended the ongoing championship and reflected on its global significance.
Sanwo-Olu revealed that Lagos will host the event on October 4 and 5, 2025, describing it as a major milestone for both the sport and the city. He noted that the championship will position Lagos as part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and innovative marine transportation.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special: our culture, our energy, and our people. It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city,” the governor said.
He also expressed gratitude to Afreximbank for its support, acknowledging the bank’s investment in Team Drogba and its role in making the event possible.
Sanwo-Olu added that Lagos is ready to deliver a world-class sporting experience, calling the upcoming championship a new chapter for the city.
The E1 Championship is the world’s first and only electric powerboat racing series, created to advance sustainable marine mobility.
