The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has initiated high-level talks with international stakeholders aimed at promoting Nigeria’s indigenous fashion, with a focus on the traditional Yoruba fabric, Adire.
The meeting brought together Mrs Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, Founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria, and the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Johnny Baxter. The discussions were centred around strategic collaborations ahead of the 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London, a key platform for showcasing African creativity on the world stage.
A statement by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry, Mrs Adeoti Sobowale, confirmed that the talks focused on elevating Adire as a cultural export and strengthening Lagos’ position as Africa’s fashion and creative hub.
Mrs Benson-Awoyinka emphasised the importance of platforms that empower local designers and preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage. She reaffirmed the state’s commitment to nurturing its creative economy through international exposure and partnerships.
“We are proud to support initiatives that highlight our cultural assets and inspire the next generation of creatives. Lagos remains a hub for innovation, style and enterprise,” the commissioner said.
Describing the engagement as a major step toward international recognition for Adire, Benson-Awoyinka expressed optimism about the growing global interest in African fashion.
Mrs Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, who is also the wife of the Ooni of Ife, called the collaboration a landmark initiative. She announced that additional partnerships are expected at the upcoming fashion event, including collaborations with the British Museum, Disney’s The Lion King, the Africa Centre, Manchester Metropolitan University and Winches.
