British monarch King Charles III has expressed his admiration for Pidgin English, revealing that Nigerian music star Davido’s song “Kante” featuring Fave deepened his appreciation for the language.
The King made this known while unveiling his exclusive Commonwealth playlist, curated to celebrate artists from across the Commonwealth nations. The playlist, titled “The King’s Music Room”, features a selection of songs that reflect the diverse cultures within the Commonwealth.
Speaking on the playlist, King Charles III recalled his previous attempt at delivering a speech in Nigerian Pidgin during a visit to Nigeria. He noted that the language is vibrant and unique, adding that his love for it has grown, partly due to Afrobeats music.
Davido’s “Kante,” a hit song from his Grammy-nominated album Timeless (2023), has been one of the standout tracks on the list. The song features rising star Fave and has been widely celebrated, breaking streaming and charting records globally.
The inclusion of Afrobeats in the royal playlist highlights the genre’s growing influence and Nigeria’s continued dominance in the global music industry. King Charles III emphasized that music has the power to bring people together, evoke emotions, and celebrate cultural heritage.
The King’s Commonwealth playlist is now available exclusively on Apple Music, in honor of Commonwealth Day 2025, which is celebrated on March 11.
