On Thursday, Kenyan President William Ruto announced the dismissal of all his Cabinet ministers and pledged to establish a new government that will be leaner and more efficient. This decision follows weeks of protests against high taxes and poor governance.

During a televised address, President Ruto also dismissed the attorney general, stating that ministries would be managed by their permanent secretaries until a new Cabinet is formed. He emphasized that his actions were a response to the grievances expressed by the people and that he plans to form a broad-based government after thorough consultations.

Kenya has experienced three weeks of unrest, culminating in protesters storming parliament on June 25 following the passage of a finance bill that increased taxes. The protests, which have escalated into demands for President Ruto’s resignation, have resulted in over 30 fatalities.

In his address, Ruto underscored his commitment to addressing the public’s concerns and ensuring a more effective government. By reshaping his administration, he aims to restore confidence and stability in the face of mounting public discontent.
