The company once known as Facebook, now Meta has just opened it’s first physical store in Burlingame, California.

if you were to guess why a store was needed for a company like Meta, you might get stumped. Well, Meta wants you to prepare for the Metaverse. So what is the Metaverse and why is Meta opening a physical store a big deal?

Let’s start with the Metaverse. In plain words, it could be described as an immersive virtual world. The idea has always been around but never really been actualized, however, when CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook was transitioning to Meta, he revealed himself and his company were determined to unlock the potential of a fully immersive Metaverse. Facebook’s Metaverse will transform how you socialize, work, shop, play and interact with the world around you.

In the Metaverse, you can be a part of the experience and not just observe it.

So what’s the significance of a store you ask? Well the idea is to lure customers in and give them a taste of what could be. The store has three main products on offer.Ā  You get to test out the Oculus Quest Two virtual reality headset, Metaā€™s Ray Ban Stories and the Portal. With these three products in the store, Meta hopes to introduce the mainstream consumer to the company’s idea of what the future holds.

According to Martin Gilliard, head of the Meta store, ā€œThe store is essential for us to be another touch point for the consumer,.ā€ ā€œWhat we will learn from this store will help inform if we continue to do more of these, but what weā€™re really looking for is the ability to tell a story and to get the feedback from the consumer.ā€

ā€œWe built the store to feel like home, to feel like work, so that you could actually easily apply how this experience translates into how to actually use it in the real world,ā€Ā He continued.
