In Anambra State, Late ex-DG of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili’s husband has been shot dead by unknown gunmen. The unfortunate incident happened on Tuesday, September 28. He was said to have attended a posthumous award event in honour of his wife, and was on his way back from Onitsha when he was shot. Videos were published on the internet of Dr. Chike Akunyili gasping for breadth while onlookers watched.
The brother of the deceased, Cyril Akunyili took to social media to say that his brother was killed by IPOB (The Indigenous People of Biafra). He said, “IPOB killed my senior brother. Why? husband of Prof. Dora Akunyili is dead. IPOB why on a Tuesday.” However, the group distanced themselves from the killing alleging that the death of Dr. Akunyili was a pure political assassination. The group further stressed that those behind the killing were contestants for the upcoming governorship elections in Anambra State.
Before his death, Dr. Chike Akunyili was managing St. Leo’s hospital in Enugu State and was knows to be very humble and accommodating. He will be greatly missed.
