Davido and Late Son, Ifeanyi

What seemed to have started as a rumor turned out to be what every parent dreads, the death of any child. On October 31, global music icon, David Adeleke better known as Davido, and his soon-to-be wife and mother to his child, Chioma, were inconsolable over the tragic demise of his son, Ifeanyi. The toddler who had just celebrated his third birthday reportedly drowned to his death, in a pool at his father’s mansion, in Banana Island, Lagos.

The spokesperson for Lagos state police, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirms the death of Davido’s and Chioma’s 3-year-old son Ifeanyi Adeleke. The sad news of the singer’s son’s death broke on social media late Monday after actress, Eniola Badmus, posted a now-deleted post of the news on her Instagram.

After the news broke out 8 people (including friends of the family residence and staff workers) were detained for questioning at the police station. Subsequently, 2 people were retained and arrested (the Nanny and Chef), who were said to be the ones directly in charge of the toddler’s safekeeping. It was later reported that they will both be charged with Negligence before the time the result of the autopsy is known.

After the conclusion of the Autopsy, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced that the autopsy confirmed that he (Ifeanyi) died by drowning. He also said the suspects are still in custody and investigations are still ongoing. He also debunked the rumors going around that Eniola Badmus was arrested in connection with the case.

This sad news took a huge toll on Nigerians and many more. Lots of fans, colleagues, and well-wishers took to social media to express their condolences to Davido and Chioma at such a difficult time. Lots of people in the entertainment industries canceled upcoming projects, and pushed back tours and song release dates, to show their respect. Many respected artistes and Very Important Persons (VIPs) including Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife had commiserated with the Adeleke family over the traumatic experience just as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State suspended political activities over the sad occurrence.
