House of Assembly Passes Bill: Law to Establish Riverine Areas Development Commission 2021 – Anambra

The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish the Riverine Areas Development Commission 2021. The House passed the bill during yesterday’s plenary in Awka.

Chukwuemeka Modilim, house of Assembly Correspondent,  reports that the Riverine Areas Development Bill seeks to tackle developmental challenges in the riverine areas of Anambra State.

The bill saddled the Development Commission with the responsibilities of receiving and managing funds allocated by the state government, local and international donors, for the interventions, resettlement, rehabilitation of farming activities. It also empowers the Commission to reconstruct roads, houses, businesses, regulating investments of victims of perennial flooding in riverine areas.

Anambra Assembly Passes Bill For Law To Establish Riverine Areas Development Commission 2021

The Proponent of the bill, Sir Somtochukwu Udeze representing Ogbaru Two Constituency said that the bill will tackle the menace of illiteracy, poverty, and other developmental challenges in the areas. The bill stipulates that riverine areas are part of Anambra State that are situated within and around the major rivers of Niger and Anambra rivers and their major tributaries of Ezichi and Ezu.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honorable Uche Okafor read out the bill to the House, while the legislators supported it through a voice vote.
