Mother's Day

It’s Mother’s Day, a day chosen to reaffirm love and gratitude to Mothers the world over.

If being a woman is hard work already, being a mother doubles that. So if for nothing, mothers do deserve this one day to be reminded how much they mean to us.

Unlike International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day doesn’t have a fixed date worldwide. In the United States, the celebration began in the early 1900s and was created by Anna Jarvis as a way to celebrate her mother’s passing. The idea of a day of celebration for Mothers across the country appealed to a lot of people and by 1911, all US states observed the holiday. This year, Mother’s Day in the US will fall on Sunday, May 8.

In Nigeria and the United Kingdom, it’s very different as ours is backed by religion. The celebration stems the 16th century when Christians would visit their “mother” church on the fourth Sunday of Lent and was initially called Mothering Sunday. The date changes every year as it’s connected to Easter and a date for that changes every year depending on the cycle of the moon. Mothers Day is always exactly 3 weeks to Easter Sunday and as Easter Sunday can occur on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25, Mother’s Day changes with it.

However, this year that date falls today, March 27.
Make your mother feel extra special today, we all know she deserves it.

Happy Mothers Day!
