Globacom, a leading digital solutions provider, has emphasized the importance of indigenous cultural festivals in promoting national identity and unity.

Speaking at the 2024 Ofala Festival held at Ime Obi in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday, the company’s Divisional Head, South, Mr. Tochukwu Okechukwu, praised the role of culture in fostering national development.

Mr. Okechukwu highlighted that cultural traditions, such as the Ofala Festival, play a crucial role in bringing people together around shared values, history, and customs. “This cohesion can enhance social stability and cooperation,” he remarked.

He further emphasized Globacom’s commitment to cultural sponsorship, adding that festivals and cultural industries significantly impact the economy by generating jobs, promoting tourism, and supporting local businesses.

“Culture influences education systems and inspires creativity and innovation,” Mr. Okechukwu explained. “A vibrant cultural heritage also strengthens a nation’s soft power, enhancing its diplomatic influence through trade, arts, and cultural exchange.”

He reiterated Globacom’s dedication to empowering communities through technology, stating, “In an interconnected world, communication is the lifeblood of society. Through dialogue and connectivity, we foster collaboration and understanding. Our mission is to ensure every voice is heard through affordable telecom services and digital solutions.”

Mr. Okechukwu also affirmed the company’s vision of combining tradition with innovation. “Technology is advancing rapidly, and we are committed to using its power to benefit society. Connectivity strengthens community bonds, bridges generations, and promotes collaboration,” he noted, assuring that Globacom will continue supporting cultural events like the Ofala and Ojude Oba festivals.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, expressed gratitude for Globacom’s consistent support, which has elevated the festival’s prestige. Igwe Achebe shared that efforts are underway to enlist the Ofala Festival on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with support requested from the Ministry of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy.

The 23rd edition of the festival since Igwe Achebe’s coronation began with the Iru Ofala on Friday and concluded with the Azu Ofala on Saturday.

The highlight of the event was the Obi’s grand emergence from his annual seclusion, followed by his majestic dance in full regalia at the Ime Obi palace. Palace chiefs and various age groups, dressed in colorful uniforms, also performed traditional dances and paid homage to the monarch.

The celebrations will conclude with a Royal Banquet in honor of Igwe Achebe at the Ime Obi on Wednesday, October 23.
