Gareth Southgate announced his resignation as England manager on Tuesday, just two days after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
In his statement, Southgate expressed, “It’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.” Southgate’s tenure began in 2016 during a particularly challenging period for the England team. Under his leadership, England reached three semi-finals and two finals in the last four tournaments.
Before Southgate’s appointment, England had managed to reach only three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their entire history, with their solitary triumph being the 1966 World Cup. Reflecting on his journey, the 53-year-old said, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.”
Additionally, tens of thousands are expected to welcome Mbappe to Real Madrid, adding to the buzz in the football world.
