The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Obollo-Afor, Udenu local government area of Enugu State was razed on Thursday night. The incident was confirmed by Mr Daniel Ndukwe, who stated that the State’s Udenu Police Divisional Headquarters received a distress call over the fire.
Responding to the distress call, he noted that the Udenu Police Divisional Headquarters responded as “Police operatives attached to the Division immediately raced to the scene while contacting Enugu State Fire Service office in the area to promptly put off the fire,” which started at about 9:40 pm on Thursday fire was finally put out.
According to Ndukwe, it took the combined efforts of the fire service, the police, and residents to eventually put out before it could spread to other offices around the building. Meanwhile, “Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire may have been caused by a power surge due to sudden power supply to the building before the incident occurred,” the police spokesman said.
However, the commissioner of police in Enugu, Mohammed Aliyu, has ordered an investigation to determine the actual cause of the fire outbreak. He noted that similar events had occurred two days after the Akwa Ibom and Abia offices were razed.
