The Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) has announced that the historical fiction film FESTAC’77 will make its exclusive preview at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in France, offering global audiences a first glimpse into a cinematic retelling of Africa’s largest cultural celebration.

Produced by Adonis Production and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the film delves into the historic Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC ’77), exploring its cultural impact and significance in shaping African identity.

Set against a defining moment in African unity, FESTAC’77 has already sparked international interest for its ambitious production and powerful storytelling. With its Cannes debut, the film is poised to mark a major moment for African cinema on the global stage.

Executive Producer Adonijah Owiriwa described the film as a powerful act of reclaiming Africa’s history through storytelling. “This film is a reclamation of Africa’s rich history,” he said. “It brings to life the ambitions, conflicts, and triumphs that shaped our storytelling. Through cinema, we are ensuring the world engages with our stories on our terms.”

Kene Okwuosa, Group CEO of Filmhouse Group, praised the film’s Cannes selection as a breakthrough for African cinema. “For too long, African stories have been sidelined or misrepresented,” he said. “This film signifies a turning point, showing the world the richness of our culture and creative depth. It’s a major step forward for Africa at the global box office.”

Prince Tonye Princewill, also an executive producer on the project, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the film’s high production standards. “Festac ’77 reflects how far we’ve come in storytelling and technical excellence,” he noted. “African stories are no longer confined to niche audiences—they’re reaching global markets. This film is proof of that.”

Slated for full release in 2025, FESTAC ’77 is expected to stand as a landmark in African cinematic history. As it makes its way from Cannes to wider audiences, the film seeks to connect Africa’s past with the present, positioning African cinema as a creative force on the world stage.
