France’s President, Emmanuel Macron has won a second term, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

This win guarantees another five years for Macron as he won 58% of the votes to the opposition’s 41%. He is also the first sitting president of France to be re-elected in 20 years.

Cheers of joy and celebrations erupted at the Champ de Mars park at the foot of the Eiffel tower, where Macron supporters waved French and EU flags. Addressing the crowd, the President vowed to respond “efficiently” to the “anger and disagreement” of voters who chose the far right.
