The Edo State Government has pledged its full support and participation in the upcoming 61st Meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Commission for Africa, scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 4 to 6.
Governor Godwin Obaseki made the commitment during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, at the Government House in Benin City. The minister had visited to seek the state’s support for the major continental event, which will be hosted by Nigeria.
Obaseki described the event as an opportunity to spotlight Edo’s globally recognised cultural heritage and tourism assets. He noted that the state stands out as a leading destination for culture and tourism in Nigeria.
“As a state, we believe we have the greatest potential for culture and tourism in the country. It is imperative for us to be at the meeting. We will support the event because it is in our best interest that it takes place,” the governor said.
Highlighting Edo’s deep cultural history and the need to showcase its ancient civilisation to the world, Obaseki revealed that the government has begun the process of developing a comprehensive tourism master plan.
“We have initiated moves to develop a tourism master plan. We are hiring international experts to develop the plan and are intent on ensuring that it is sustainable,” he added.
Speaking on the significance of the meeting, Alhaji Mohammed said the event presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to display its cultural richness and tourism potential to the world.
“In addition to the socio-economic gains, the event will put the country on the global map. We will showcase our tourism potential and cultural assets, including arts and music. This could not have come at a better time,” the minister said.
He confirmed that 51 African ministers are expected to attend the meeting and expressed confidence that, with the collaboration of key stakeholders, the event will be a major success.
On Edo’s role, the minister stressed that the state is too critical to be left out of any global discussion on tourism.
“Edo State cannot be ignored at such a global meeting on tourism. A critical city like Benin cannot be left out in such a meeting,” he stated.
