As the world celebrates Democracy day, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Right Honourable Uche Okafor has commended Governor Willie Obiano for enthroning participatory democracy in the state, particularly through his 20 million naira Community Choose Your Project Initiative, which has taken development and good governance to the hinterlands.

According to the Speaker who issued a goodwill message to mark the event, he maintained that democracy is a fundamental requirement for sustainable growth and development. It is for this reason that he also applauded the State’s lawmakers for providing democracy dividends for their constituents through various empowerment programs and constituency projects, so as to improve upon their living standards.

Conversely, Hon. Uche Okafor urged other governments to give democracy a chance to thrive by creating an enabling environment for the citizenry to contribute to good governance and reap its benefits. This is given the fact that the International Day of Democracy itself is a day set aside to evaluate the strength of democracy across the globe.

The International Day of Democracy was established through a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly to encourage the government to strengthen and consolidate democracy.

According to the United Nations, The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.  Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society, and individuals can the ideal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.
