Popular Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie in a video that went viral yesterday replied to the Catholic Parish Priest who verbally criticized her over her comments about the Catholic church in Nigeria .

Using the Igbo dialect, the ‘Purple Hibiscus’ author explained why she angrily left the church over the Parish Priest’s verbal attack on her during the Sunday mass for her mother’s burial; she stated that it was the love she has for the people of Abba that made her come back.

According to her, the Priest had opportunities to talk to her prior to that time, instead he chose that day to speak when they still had tears in their eyes mourning the loss of their mother.

He always saw her and her siblings even when they were begging him for a date for the funeral. However, the Parish Priest decided to talk openly about a previous  interview that the author had had, where she mentioned that she doesn’t attend Catholic churches in Nigeria because they are mostly about money.

Giving an instance where parishioners were locked out of the parish because the parish was holding a fundraising ceremony; she mentioned that it is okay to give money in church but you cannot force those who do not have to give; this was what she was trying to imply in that interview, she explained.

Many comments have been made concerning how outspoken she is, and several Nigerians believe that she did the right thing and also applauded her confidence for speaking up about it openly.
