The Cannes Film Festival is an international film festival. The 77th edition is scheduled for May 14 to 25, 2024.

India Pavilion theme: “Create In India,” featuring senior officials, producers, distributors, creative artists, and business leaders from India.

Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival takes place annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

Cannes Film Festival, formerly the International Film Festival until 2003, showcases new films of all genres, including documentaries, from around the world.

Cannes is among Europe’s “Big Three” film festivals, alongside Venice and Berlin, and part of the global “Big Five” with Toronto and Sundance.

The Festival de Cannes reserves exclusivity for film industry professionals. You don’t need to register with the Festival if you request through the Marché du Film, as the Market badge grants all Festival rights and screening access.

American filmmaker and actress Greta Gerwig will serve as jury president for the main competition. French actress Camille Cottin will host the opening and closing ceremonies.

Hartland Villa designed the festival’s official poster, incorporating a still from Akira Kurosawa’s “Rhapsody in August” (1991).

At the festival, they awarded three Honorary Palme d’Ors: to Meryl Streep, Studio Ghibli, and George Lucas.

Just days before the opening ceremony, festival workers called for a general strike. The Broke Behind the Screens collective aired concerns about the precariousness of film festival work.

After selecting “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” authorities sentenced Mohammad Rasoulof to eight years in prison, flogging, a fine, and property confiscation for “propaganda against the regime.” They interrogated and pressured cast and crew to convince Rasoulof to withdraw the film from the festival. Rasoulof and crew fled Iran to Europe and will attend the film’s red carpet on May 24, 2024.

The festival opened with French comedy-film The Second Act directed by Quentin Dupieux.
