Fulham and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has shed light on the unique challenges faced by African footballers, particularly regarding wages and the weight of family expectations.

Bassey, who earns a reported £45,000 per week, is one of many African players in the English Premier League.

At 25, Bassey has been a key player for Fulham this season, consistently performing on the left side of Marco Silva’s defence. His impressive form has contributed to Fulham’s comfortable mid-table position. In a recent interview, the former Ajax defender discussed the cultural differences that drive players to seek higher wages and bigger contracts.

“When I look at my wage, half isn’t mine. Half is for my mum, and brothers, who I’ve got to look after,” Bassey revealed. “I can’t speak for every other culture, but with the African culture, we’re all about taking care of our families, and I have to do the same.”

Bassey emphasized the importance of supporting his family back home. “I have to think of my family back home and what I can do to help them out. As mad as it sounds, two to three thousand pounds a week can make a difference by looking after more people. That’s why we, as players, always want more—not necessarily for ourselves or to live a flashy life, but because we have people we look out for, and that is a very important factor.”

Bassey is not the only Nigerian making an impact at Fulham. His compatriot, Alex Iwobi, has also been a standout player this season, contributing significantly to the team’s 10th-place standing.
