In a surprising announcement today, U.S. President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that he will not be seeking re-election for a second term.
The announcement comes as the nation reflects on significant progress made over the past three and a half years under his administration.
Addressing the American citizens, President Biden highlighted the milestones achieved during his presidency. He emphasized the robust economy, which he described as “the strongest in the world,” citing historic investments in national rebuilding, lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and expanding affordable healthcare to a record number of Americans.
The President also pointed out the administration’s efforts in addressing environmental and social issues, including the passage of significant climate legislation, the first major gun safety law in 30 years, and the appointment of the first African American woman to the Supreme Court.
President Biden acknowledged the collective effort of the American people in overcoming the pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
“We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world,” he stated.
Despite his achievements, the president believes that it is in the best interest of the nation and his party for him to step down at the end of his term.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he said.
He expressed his gratitude to Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “an extraordinary partner in all this work.”
In his heartfelt message, Biden thanked the American people for their trust and support, reaffirming his belief in the country’s potential. “There is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America,” he concluded.
The president is expected to address the nation later this week to provide more details about his decision.
